Anthology of Soul & Funk: 500 cover pictures
The groove collection "Funk & Soul Covers" contains 500 legendary cover images of African-American music and thus represents a beguiling visual anthology of Soul & Funk. Here psychedelic and black power, social conscience and sexual liberation, authentic black and white photography and surreal comic style meet. The book contains very rare covers as well as classics, which all together symbolize a musical era. The designs are brilliant, daring, sometimes totally weird and mostly insanely beautiful. The music for these covers is by James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Prince and Michael Jackson. The book also contains interviews with leaders of the music industry. Furthermore, texts on the cultural environment of the cover creation underline the unique prints.
About the book
The book "Funk & Soul Covers" by Taschen Verlag is part of the Bibliotheca Universalis series, which has been offering compact cultural companions and sometimes daring publications at very affordable prices since 1980. Almost 100 of the series' favourite titles are now being published in a new, more compact format. They cover culture, art and the cult of the body. The "Funk & Soul Covers" were compiled, edited and published by Joaquim Paulo and Julius Wiedemann. They appear in hardcover format 14 x 19.5 cm on 576 pages (ISBN 978-3-8365-5626-2) multilingual in German, English and French. Joaquim Paulo has been advising various major record labels for many years, while at the same time managing several Portuguese radio stations. He has been collecting records since the age of 15, and new records can be found in Paris, New York, London and São Paulo. His collection is said to have grown to over 25,000 LPs.
